GE's New Rural China Commercial
Okay, having frequented areas of rural China in the past year, I can say with absolute confidence that I have never seen people that attractive in any of the villages or townships that I came across. Natives of these small villages - located amidst what seems here to be mountain ranges - are usually the type of people who lacked proper medical/cosmetic care while growing up, and as a result, present with one or more of the following features: missing teeth, goiters, UV-damaged skin, disheveled hair, suspicious looking skin lesions, etc.
For God's sakes, the guy in the commercial has better hair than I do! Is that jealousy rearing its ugly head? Perhaps.
However, despite the obvious lack of realism (for me at least) in this commecial, I have to admit that it is rather cute and somewhat endearing in a "love actually" kind of way.
Finally, as an Asian American male forever looking to promote the welfare of his brothers, I am obligated to criticize the helpless role forced upon the Asian male in this commercial. Why couldn't they make an equally funny advertisement with him in a more confident and commanding position rather than at the mercy of the female? Both his clumsy behavior and his occupation as a cook renders him inferior to the female character, who is a confident doctor that is capable of flirting and walking at the same time - much like yours truly ;-) The commercial ends with the male lying in a helpless, prone position, staring expectantly towards the towering female, who is, without doubt, the possessor of power in this fictional relationship.
With all that being said, I still like this commercial. It's one of the funnier and more refreshing ones out there.
Except for the goat in the waiting room. Come on, GE!
